As someone with 31 years of experience in the travel industry, I’ve seen the industry shift many times—and I know it will shift again. But one thing that has always remained constant is the value of a travel adviser who understands their clients on a personal level. In this blog, we’re going to explore how you can leverage AI to help you grow your travel business while addressing why it cannot, and will not, replace the core functions of your role as a travel adviser. We’ll look at how AI can assist you and where its limitations are, plus share some practical tips on using tech to enhance your services.
Why AI Won’t Replace Travel Advisors Anytime Soon
AI is becoming a popular topic in the travel industry, and some fear that technology will make human travel advisers a rarity. However, AI lacks a key component that defines the success of a great travel adviser—the human touch.
Take, for example, my experience in planning travel itineraries. I used ChatGPT to build an itinerary for a Disney trip for a family of four, and while it provided a reasonable starting point, it had several significant gaps that highlighted its limitations. Let’s take a closer look.
AI vs. Cindy: A Disney Itinerary
To put AI to the test, I used ChatGPT to create a family itinerary for a Disney trip. The prompt I entered was straightforward:
“I am building a travel itinerary for a family of four. They are VIP clients wanting to visit Disney World for three nights and Universal for two nights in October. They have two teenagers who love Halloween, and the mom needs a scooter for mobility following knee surgery.”
At first glance, the AI-generated itinerary seemed solid. It suggested staying at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort, which is luxurious and has great access to the Magic Kingdom. It also proposed attending Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and even recommended rides that fit the spooky theme. But when we dig deeper, we see where AI lacks.
For one, the AI couldn’t provide specifics on logistical details—like my trusted contacts for VIP transfers and scooter rentals. It didn’t ask clarifying questions either, such as whether this family wanted to stay in a particular type of room or which airlines they prefer. It also failed to account for key timing details—suggesting an elaborate dinner and a park visit on the day of arrival, which is unrealistic when considering flight times, check-ins, and family energy levels.
Beyond that, it even recommended Splash Mountain, a ride that has been closed for a while. Because AI doesn’t always have the most up-to-date details, especially when something changed recently.
These examples show that AI can only go so far when it comes to creating a personalized travel experience. It lacks the ability to ask questions, understand family dynamics, or offer empathy—all things a human travel adviser excels at.
The Importance of Human Touch
As a travel adviser, you have a distinct advantage—the ability to truly understand your clients. You can ask follow-up questions, dive deeper into their needs, and create a unique experience that exceeds their expectations. You know that not all families want the same things—two teenage boys might not enjoy the same dining experience as a couple celebrating their anniversary, and a mom recovering from knee surgery will need careful planning for comfort.
AI simply cannot offer the same level of empathy and personal touch. It doesn’t understand the excitement a client has when they talk about their dream vacation or the anxiety they might have about traveling with young children. It can’t comfort a worried traveler or make last-minute adjustments when things go wrong. The human touch is irreplaceable, and AI isn’t there yet—and it likely won’t be for a long time.
Another key area where human travel advisers excel is problem-solving. Travel involves complex logistics, and problems will come up that require quick thinking and creative solutions. AI, on the other hand, is limited by its programming and its inability to work in real-time. You wouldn’t want your clients relying solely on AI if they needed support during a trip.
How You Can Leverage AI to Grow Your Travel Business
While AI won’t replace human travel advisers, it can still be a valuable tool to help you work smarter. Instead of seeing AI as a threat, see it as a new way to improve your services, save time, and grow your business. Here are some of the key ways you can leverage AI:
1. Automate Routine Tasks
One of the most powerful uses of AI is automation. It can help streamline routine administrative tasks, such as booking confirmations, itinerary updates, and answering frequently asked questions. Automating these tasks saves you time and reduces the chances of human error.
2. Predictive Analysis
AI can also assist in predictive analysis. It can analyze data to predict travel trends, customer demands, or potential issues like weather disruptions. This can help you be proactive in informing your clients and suggesting alternatives if problems arise. By using AI to gather insights into patterns and historical data, you’ll have a clearer idea of how to best serve your clients.
3. Chatbots and Virtual Assistants
AI-powered chatbots are useful for providing customer support around the clock. By training a chatbot properly, it can answer common questions, handle inquiries, and even help clients during times when you might not be available.
Virtual assistants can also assist with appointment scheduling, reminders, and managing client interactions, giving you more time to focus on high-value activities, such as building client relationships.
4. Fraud Detection
AI systems can help identify and reduce potential security and fraud issues by monitoring transactions for unusual activities. With AI-powered fraud detection, you can help protect your clients and ensure a secure booking process, improving trust and confidence in your services.
AI in the Travel Industry: A Tool, Not a Replacement
The travel industry will continue to change, and while technology like AI will play an important role, the value of a human travel adviser will always be unmatched. Empathy, personal connections, problem-solving, and understanding client needs are core strengths that AI simply cannot replicate.
Instead of fearing AI, embrace it. Use it to free up your time, make informed decisions, and enhance the services you offer. Your clients will appreciate the combination of efficiency and personal care that only you, a dedicated travel adviser, can provide.
